Course Description

Clinical
Intermediate Foundation

This half-day training session provides essential knowledge and hands-on skills for safe and effective blood collection. Participants will learn key principles of phlebotomy, including legal and professional considerations, basic anatomy, and physiology, drawing techniques, and equipment assembly. The session also covers infection prevention and control, the correct order of draw, labelling and documentation procedures, and strategies for overcoming difficult veins. Ideal for healthcare professionals looking to enhance their competency in venepuncture.

Course Objectives

  • This study session aims to provide you with the foundation knowledge and skills required to begin to obtain adult venous blood samples safely and effectively 

 Please Note - no practice should be undertaken until you have consulted your manager. This study session is only one part of the whole competency development process. Following this session, assessment of practice must be performed by a designated person in your workplace before you can be deemed competent to practice independently. You may need further training to be able to undertake paediatric phlebotomy, and you would normally require more than 3 months experience once competent in adult phlebotomy.

  • Identify and discuss the key principles of safe phlebotomy 

  • Apply the knowledge of upper limb anatomy to safely obtain venous blood samples 

  • Demonstrate your phlebotomy skills using a simulator
