The aim of this session is to teach you the role of a Chaperone in primary care settings, providing a comprehensive understanding of current guidance and the situations where a Chaperone may be needed. This session will teach you the importance of having a chaperone present during medical examinations or procedures to ensure patient safety, dignity, and comfort. You will receive pre-reading and post-reading materials to support your learning and complete a short assessment to test your knowledge during the training. 

Course Objectives

  • This course will help you to gain insight into why a chaperone might be needed during medical examinations or procedures 

  • You will learn about the current guidance surrounding the use of chaperones in healthcare and how to apply the knowledge gained to real-world clinical situations where a chaperone may be required 

Learning Outcomes

  • Define the term ‘Chaperone’

  • Describe the role of a Chaperone and explain how you will undertake this role 

  • Recognise when a Chaperone is needed in your practice 

  • Discuss what is meant by an intimate examination 

  • Have an awareness of the rights of the patient in relation to Chaperone services 

  • Recognise safeguarding issues related to being a Chaperone and understand how to escalate the concerns
