General Practice Assistant (GPA) Programme

General Practice Assistants are an important part of the wider general practice team, providing a combination of administrative support and basic clinical duties that help GPs make the best use of their time and focus their clinical expertise on patient care.

The GPA Programme is entering its next phase.

Working across seven NHS regions and 29 Integrated Care System areas, the programme will provide a nationally coordinated and accredited development route for the GPA workforce, while ensuring delivery remains connected to the needs of local primary care.

National coordination. Regional expertise. Local delivery.

The programme will operate across seven NHS regions and 29 ICS areas, creating a national network of educators and programme teams supporting GPA development. The programme builds on our previous delivery of the GPA programme across London through South East London Workforce Development Hub (SELWDH), which received a Princess Royal Training Award in recognition of its approach to training and development. We will now build on that work nationally to develop the GPA role across England, while creating greater consistency in access to an accredited development route. Through the programme we will support:

Consistent, high-quality GPA education and development

Access to an accredited pathway

Strong workplace-based supervision and educational support

Practices and employers developing the GPA role

Regional and ICS-level educator networks

Sustainable development of the GPA workforce
